James Gould, PhD | Thinking Animals United

James Gould, PhD

James-GouldJim Gould, Ph.D., is Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University and one of the world’s leading experts in animal behavior. With science writer Carol Grant Gould he has written The Animal Mind, Sexual Selection, and The Honey Bee, all considered classic books on animal behavior for lay audiences.

His work encompasses animal communication, learning, and orientation behavior; and he extended his research to include learning behavior in human infants and the development of human language.

In 1974 he demonstrated that bees use a ‘waggling dance’ to show other bees the location of food.

Dr. Gould was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He joined the Princeton faculty in 1975 and became a full professor of biology there in 1983.
